Writer/Designer: A Guide to Making Multimodal Projects, "What Are Multimodal Projects?" served to define several key terms in the creation of multimodal texts and helped to clarify often misunderstood concepts in its domain.

- A text can be written words, as well as a piece of communication as a whole.
- The five modes of communication are linguistic (use of language), visual (use of images), aural (use of sound), gestural (use of movement), and spatial (use of physical arrangement).
- Media is the singular form of medium. It includes photo, video, speech, paper, and more.
- Medium is the way in which text reaches its audience.
- Affordances are the strengths and weaknesses of media. The writer should consider these before picking a text.
